KG Virtual School – Monday Oct. 31

Due to school closure, we will be conducting online learning this week.

Online learning is not mandatory for Elementary School students, but it is provided for parents to continue the routine of your child’s learning throughout thi week.

Please make sure that these learning opportunities are fun and enjoyable for your students!

Writing

Monday – Ask your child to tell you a “real story about you” just like we have been doing in Writing Workshop. Ask them what happened first, next, and then. You can use hand cues (like counting one, two, three) to help your child talk about the three parts.

Tuesday – Have your child sketch their story across three pages. They can write words at the bottom or label their pictures if they feel comfortable doing so.

Reading

Please read with your child everyday!

Have your child teach you how to “partner read”. Ask them how to sit, where to place the book, and about taking turns choosing books.

Science

Have your child look for things that are made of wood in your home (or the place you’re staying at right now). Have them share with you why they think it is made of wood and how they know. Ask your child to sketch three things they found that are made of wood, paying careful attention to details and colors.

More activities will be posted by Wednesday!

Thinking About Story Elements

We have studied the story of the Three Little Pigs to help us learn and understand story elements like character, plot and setting. We read the story, then watched the classic Disney movie of the Three Little Pigs and discussed how they were the same or different.

Here is the venn diagram we made:

Later we discussed the term “setting” and what that means in a story. We came up with all different kinds of settings:

Then, we drew our own version of The Three Little Pigs… in a different setting. Come check out our bulletin board to see our work!

Three Mystery Readers!

This past week we were very lucky to have not one, not two, but three mystery readers!

We kick started the week with Mr. Robertson. He read us a very funny book called Guess Again by Mac Barnett. It was chosen as the number 2 best children’s book in 2009 by Time Magazine! Mr. Robertson had us rolling on the floor with Grandpa Ned! He read us another book called Clumsy Crab by Ruth Galloway, which we also liked.

Mrs. Armitage visited us on Tuesday with a book called Mrs. Armitage Queen of the Road by Quentin Blake.  We love that the character’s name is also Mrs. Armitage!

On Wednesday, we had a mystery reader visit us through Skype. Miss Tara read Monkey with a Tool Belt and the Noisy Problem by Chris Monroe. During a previous visit to the library, she shared with us Monkey with a Tool Belt and we love the main character, Chico Ban Ban!

Click on the photos above to see more pictures of our mystery readers!

Thanks!

Getting Started in… Reading

We have read many books about starting school and Kindergarten. We particularly like:

Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten by Joseph Slate

Otto Goes to School by Todd Parr

We also read and completed activities inspired by Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. We have our very own Brown Bear characters in our classroom, but they seem to keep disappearing! Where could they be?
